Nigerians have been warned
against enrolling at online universities which offer academic programmes
without provision for physical contact with admitted students.
The Director of Information and Public Relations of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Ibrahim Yakasai, said this on Thursday in Abuja.
Yakasai
told journalists that degrees obtained online will be rejected because
the Nigerian constitution has no backing or recognition for them.
“Nigeria
will not recognize online degrees. Online degrees are not accepted in
Nigeria at the moment; the Nigerian constitution does not even give
recognition to such degrees," he said.
According
to the NUC spokesman, many students patronize online universities simply
because they want cheap means of acquiring qualifications.
"Those who ran out of Nigeria for study outside this country are those looking for cheaper degrees," he added.
"It is either they cannot pass the examinations or they do not possess the minimum entry qualifications.”
He also urged parents to consult with the NUC before enrolling their wards at foreign institutions.
