Unilorin is currently the most preferred public university in Nigeria Prof Charles Ayo Korede:

Prof Charles Ayo Korede
What prompted your desire to study at UNILORIN amongst other Universities in the country?  I had my Ph.D degree at UNILORIN while I was lecturing at LAUTECH. There were two factors that prompted my desire namely, quality and proximity. The quality of education was high coupled with the fact that I lived in Ilorin then.  What was your experience like at UNILORIN? Prof Charles Ayo Korede  Prof Charles Ayo Korede  As a Ph.D student coming from home and LAUTECH, Ogbomoso, at times, I had little time for social and political interactions. Academically, my attention was on my Ph.D programme, which was titled: “An Integrated Design, Visualization and Analysis of Structures-(ADVAS)”. It was a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research work that necessitated my interaction and collaboration with scholars in Mechanical and Civil Engineering as well as Mathematics and Computer Science Departments. I enjoyed the support of all and sundry.  Who were the people that made the greates impact on you while in Ilorin?  Professor Gbadeyan was my supervisor in Mathematics department, Engr(Dr.) Raji Abdus-Sabir of Civil Engineering, some professionals like Engr. Oshanisi, Arc Bolarin and Mr. Adegboro, who  provided the practical background to my work and a few friends like Dr. Adeogo, Okeyinka and Olugbara among others.  I also enjoyed the support of Dr. Sadiku, Dr. Taiwo, Dr. Bamgbola and many others.  How would you compare UNILORIN of your days and of today?  A few years ago, I had the privilege of assessing some Ph.D candidates in Computer Science at the University. Inspite of the poor funding, I can simply say that UNILORIN is an institution making the best of the present situation in the country.  UNILORIN is celebrating its 40th anniversary of academic excellence this year, do you think this great ivory tower has achieved most of its objectives?  UNILORIN is a second generation university. Her age notwithstanding, it competes well and far above some first generation universities. Her products are doing wonderfully well in every sector of the economy within and outside Nigeria.  To me, the 40th Anniversary celebration is a way of appreciating God for the great achievements. I know that whatever you appreciate God for multiplies. It is on record that UNILORIN is currently the most preferred Public University in Nigeria. It emerged number one sometimes in the webometrics ranking; and it has a stable academic calendar among other things. It is simply the flagship of public higher education in Nigeria.  What advice do you have for all stakeholders of the university so that UNILORIN can continue to excel.  It is a known fact that all over the world that the level of development of any nation economically, socially and politically is a function of the quality of education offered by her higher education institutions. In the midst of paucity of funds, UNILORIN is a pride to the nation. I congratulate the council, management, faculty, staff, students and the Alumni of the University on this historic occasion. To sustain this tempo, the University should seek alternative funding for her programmes by not relying on government. Also, the University should further improve on impactful research, focus on entrepreneurial education for self reliance and improve the quality of graduates that will impact the nation positively.  How has your career been since you graduated from UNILORIN?  I have learnt that there is no shortcut to any where worth going. Therefore, to succeed you need to work hard.  To the glory of God, I head the Covenant University, Ota, a leading University in Nigeria and West Africa and ranked 15 in Africa. Covenant University is the most preferred private university in Nigeria.  By virtue of hard work with tenacity of purpose and utmost dependence on God, we are doing well.
